Self-centeredness is also a very common unhealthy pattern. When we see the world as existing for our benefit with everything and everyone subservient to our needs and desires, we are probably manifesting this pattern. There has been a lot of emphasis on narcissism in psychological circles  and rightly so. Self-centeredness seems everywhere.

There is another pattern that directly curtails openness. Avoiding and Hiding is when we do not face reality. We create a space in ourselves where we are safe from anything that might force us to confront anything uncomfortable – even other parts of ourselves. Indeed, this pattern often has to do with things we experience  and refuse to acknowledge.  Pessimism, fear of change, and withdrawal are symptoms of a heart that has hardened and closed. It is always possible to take an active role in opening your heart and to reclaim your true nature.
